Beech wood lidded box – Suki Hanna

Spalted beech wood lidded box.

The grain is distinctive, with natural dark lines created by spalting. Spalting occurs when fungi mark the wood; it must be worked at the right stage, before it becomes too soft.
The piece has a semi-gloss finish made with two coats of shellac.

For scale, the final photograph includes a 10 cm-high, 4 cm-wide reference.
